Founded in 1573, Niterói is one of the best cities in Brazil to live, work and invest. With currently about 500 thousand inhabitants, Niterói has the highest Municipal Human Development Index (IDHM) of the Rio de Janeiro state and it is the seventh largest IDHM of the whole country, according to the UNDP. Niterói is also the most educated city in the country, according to data from the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research (INEP) in 2000. The average years of school attendance is 9.5 and the literacy rate is 96.4% among the population over 15 years.
The city's main landmark is the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (MAC), a flying disc that rests on a hill above the Guanabara bay. The MAC is part of the Niemeyer Path, a series of works designed by Oscar Niemeyer, as the name suggests. Niterói is the city with more projects designed by him after Brasilia. Also, Niterói has a complex of fortresses, oceanic beaches, such as Itacoatiara, a well known fish market and a gastronomic excellence which makes Niterói an important tourist destination in Brazil. Besides that, it has a privileged view of the most famous landmarks of Rio de Janeiro, which is separated from Niterói by only 8 miles.
